Florian Schmidt’s works always speak of their structure. The inherent qualities and limitations of the materials he uses inform and form the resulting works. Similarly, the precise restrictions of the 80cm cube ‘Der Würfel’, was fundamental to realising ‘Uncertain Equality’.

Schmidt created an expansion of a canvas that fills the space. The work is both a construction (a sculpture) and a deconstruction (of painting). When engaging with the work this is revealed. From the front the work appears as a symmetrical composition of dark monochromatic canvas divided by white horizontal and vertical bars. Viewed from the side however, the symmetry becomes disrupted. The painted panels of canvas are distributed throughout the depth of the cube. The work is activated by the viewer who sees a new image with every angle.

Florian Schmidts Werke artikulieren offen ihre Struktur. Die inhärenten Eigenschaften und Beschränkungen des Materials prägen und formen den endgültigen Entwurf. Auch die strenge Raumvorgabe des 80 x 80 cm großen „Würfels“ hat die Konzeption von Uncertain Equality maßgeblich beeinflusst.

Schmidt erweitert die Leinwand zu einer raumfüllenden Installation, die – wie sich bei näherer Untersuchung zeigt – zugleich als Konstruktion (einer Skulptur) und als Dekonstruktion (der Malerei) funktioniert. Von vorne gesehen präsentiert sich das Werk als symmetrische Komposition: Die dunkle monochrome Bildfläche wird durch weisse horizontale und vertikale Streben unterteilt. Von der Seite betrachtet verliert sich allerdings die Symmetrie, denn die bemalten Bildsegmente sind in unterschiedlicher Tiefe im Würfel positioniert. Jeder Wechsel des Blickpunkts erzeugt ein neues Bild und die bewegte Rezeption des Betrachters aktiviert das Werk.
