Sinae Yoo, Untitled, 2017

Neumeister Bar-Am are pleased to present a solo presentation of new work by Korean born artist Sinae Yoo (1985, lives and works in Seoul and Bern).

Presented at DAMA are four new works: a central sculpture composed of a gobbet of Nivea creme crystalised in a solid transparent cube that sits over an image of vaginal jewellery, and three illustrative works that draw on themes from her new video works which will be shown in her first solo exhibition at Neumeister Bar-Am opening 18th November.

The works at DAMA form a strong relationship to Yoo’s practice which is constant process of understanding and recognising new forms of violence, purity and protection. Her interest and use of Nivea is foundational. Nivea, which takes its name from the Latin word niveus/nivea/niveum, meaning “snow-white”, established in 1882 in Germany, Nivea is a product that represents purity and cleanliness, but is ultimately intertwined with the country’s dark history.

Yoo is also investigating the connection between a violation of privacy and the violence technologies present by gathering more and more images and information. A penetration into the soul of individuals and a forced transparency are abstract concepts that become rendered in her new works.
